I totally agree. The work is the thing. Everything else is white noise. Sometime there are the moments that surprise and delight, such as when a stranger tells you what they love about your work or you get an email along the same lines or an unexpected invitation that takes you out of your comfort zone.

Wonderfully honest reflections on the essence of the work! Congratulations on the shortlisting anyway.

At the risk of sounding like a professor, let me cite Thoreau. "Follow your genius closely enough and it will not fail to show you a fresh prospect every hour." Well, maybe 'every hour' is a bit of an exaggeration, but you and he have it right, Paula. Huzzahs!

"make the work your end" wise words and great post. Thank you Paula!
